TaxWiz (Taxamatic)
by Alessandro Cancian

Tax time, one of the least loved periods of the year for all, Canadians included. But do not despair, and stop chewing on your pencil or pulling at your hair; there are much more efficient and fast ways to prepare your tax return, including some software products that can come to the rescue.
Some time ago I tried TaxWiz, an entirely made-in-Canada software, made by Taxamatic. The impression I got was positive, albeit with some reservations. TaxWiz is a Netfile Certified software, i.e. once you complete the forms you can file your taxes over the internet to Revenue Canada (you must have received a Web Access Code from Revenue Canada to be eligible). Completing the forms proved at times uselessly difficult; I had to recur several times to the on-line help (very well done, by the way). My hope is that next release will have better wizard panels.
In order to prevent software piracy, the only way to run TaxWiz is to leave its CD in its drive, and at times this is mildly annoying. If you really do not want to buy the software, costing just $29.95 ($10 mail-in rebate) and offering an unlimited number of returns, you can always do your taxes on-line. Taxamatic, in fact, is also offering its services via the Web for just $7.95 a return (free for incomes below $20,000). In any case, TaxWiz will simplify your life at tax time, and it is a pity it only has a Win version. For further information you may visit www.taxwiz.ca
