Agfa SnapScan e50
by Alessandro Cancian

A little pressure on a button and your picture is ready to be e-mailed or eventually included in a presentation. If you think Im dreaming, you have yet to try the new SnapScan e50 scanner from Agfa. Pity, because I can assure you that working with an e50 is definitely pleasant as well as extremely simple. The installation of this lightweight and compact scanner entailed no problem: it was enough to plug it in using the USB port that equips it and to install the software bundled with it.
Ten minutes after the first picture was ready for e-mailing.
In order to use e50 you dont need any previous experience in creating good images or anything else. The Agfa SnapScan e50 comes in fact with a four-button programmable panel, located on the front. These four buttons are configured for functions such as acquiring an image and attaching it to an e-mail to be sent; acquiring an image for use in any kind of document, such as a Word file or a Photoshop file; and sending the image directly to a printer or recognizing a text.
Put the picture in the scanner, press a button and voila! Youll see the result in front of you. For those who feel like more of a challenge, once youve scanned your image into the scanners ScanWise software, you can opt for the guided tour or go ahead and figure out the process on your own. The Agfa Snap Scan e50 is both PC- and Mac-compatible, especially suited for iMac users considering the possibility of changing the colour of the plastic front.
The scanner comes with an OCR software from ReadIris, so printed documents become text you can edit, and Corel Print Office 2000 just in case you feel more artistic. The quality of the images is good especially for the price ($299 CND) that the scanner sells for. Colours are very lifelike even when old magazines are scanned. In case you need to scan negatives or slides (35 mm), the e50 has a transparency module to be placed under its cover.
The SnapScan e50s not a professional machine but it does make life a lot easier.
