Palm Pilot, QuickCam, IntelliMouse, printer, and more. The arrival of the USB interface in the computer world has recently encouraged an increase in the number of peripheral devices connected to our PC. In fact, while connecting more than one device used to be problematic, now things have become much easier.
In the new generation of computers, USB is the standard interface. It allows the connection of an unbelievable quantity of peripherals (up to 127). There are no more problems with IRQs or restarts every time one has to connect a printer or change a mouse.
As mentioned, this interface can handle a very high number of peripherals, but of course a hub is needed since most PCs come equipped with no more than two USB ports. Keyspan, a leading manufacturer of USB products, recently launched a new model of USB hub on the market.
Equipped with 4 ports, the hub comes in several colours, in case you need to match your iMac style. Differentiating itself from several other currently available hubs, the new Keyspan products support dual power modes as they can be used either as a "bus powered hub" (drawing power from the USB connection) or as a "self powered hub" (drawing power from a wall socket). Perfectly cross-platform, this hub can be used indifferently on Macs or an PCs equipped with USB ports, with no need to install any software.
After one month of continuous use with no problem whatsoever, its easy for me to declare that these $39 (U.S.) were well-spent.
