Terrorism, history and passion for Italy at TIFF
Six films and 13 co-productions by De Maria, Bellocchio, Tornatore, Piccioni, Guadagnino and Capotondi
By Paola Bernardini

From the terrorism of the Years of Lead to Mussolini’s private life and to a grandiose production of manners that cover the story of Italy from the turn of the century to current times, in addition to a psychological thriller, an introverted love story of a woman on probation, to the internecine war of the upper class. These are the plots for the six Italian films that will be presented at the 34th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) that this year boasts a legion of actors and directors that would make the Venice Film Festival and Cannes Festival wince.
A world premiere is The Front Line, directed by Renato De Maria, starring Riccardo Scamarico and Giovanna Mezzogiorno who will also appear in Marco Bellocchio’s Vincere alongside Filippo Timi – he plays Il Duce and will also appear in The Double Hour by Giuseppe Capotondi (co-starring Xenia Rappoport).
Arriving directly from Venice is Giuseppe Tornatore with Baaria, while Giuseppe Piccioni presents Giulia Doesn’t Date at Night with Valeria Golino and Valerio Mastandrea. Finally, the young Luca Guadagnino will showcase I Am Love, which stars Tilda Swinton.
Year after year, Italy’s presence at TIFF is becoming more and more extensive. One of the reasons is that Toronto is an exceptional market for buyers, producers, and distributors who have the opportunity to initiate relationships and projects with Canadian and American partners, as well as an important window to the North American cinematographic industry for Italian actors.
There is eager anticipation for Tornatore, the Oscar-winning director known to Toronto audiences for Nuovo Cinema Paradiso, La Sconosciuta (distributed in Canada last year), and Malena. This year, he will present Baaria, an emotional tale that spans three generations of a Sicilian village where the director was born. The film features Gabriele Lavia, Monica Bellucci, Enrico Lo Verso, Raoul Bova, Laura Chiatti, Nino Frassica, Luigi Lo Cascio, and many others. Slotted into the “Special Presentations” section, the film stars two unknown actors in the lead roles: Francesco Scianna, and Margaret Madè.
