The recipe is simple: you take a regular inkjet printer and you scale it down... and down... and down... and you get a Photosmart 100.
Actually, you don't even have to scale down a printer, because HP took care of that. It's like building a printer for kids, except that the results make it a toy for adults.
The PhotoSmart 100, in fact, is a portable inkjet printer able to reproduce you digital pictures almost perfectly. The printer uses 4x6-inch photo paper, perforated along one side in order to offer high-quality, bordless pictures. The paper is fed from the front of the printer and goes all the way to the back, then reproduction begins and the finished photo comes out.
Using this printer does not necessarily require a connection via computer, just a USB link, as the Photosmart 100 can print photos directly from a CompactFlash card, SmartMedia or Memory Stick, the storage devices used by the various digital cameras available today. The only important detail is to remember the number of the photo you intend to print, since the tiny LCD screen of the printer cannot visualize the shots.
Print quality is respectable and colours are very lifelike. Let the prints dry perfectly, otherwise your fingerprints will generate unexpected effects.
Even though the price of the printer is under $300 (quite affordable) one should pay attention to the cost of each print, which includes the price of cartridges and paper. $1.4 per print, according to my calculations: quite high.
A final piece of advice: beware of the instructions printed on the box on how to insert the paper, since they are exactly the opposite of how it should be done.
