Chris Vrenna
American McGee's Alice - Six Degrees/Outside Music

Reviewing the soundtrack for a video game without playing the game may be like "dancing about architecture" (to paraphrase Frank Zappa's famous observation on writing about music) but luckily former Nine Inch Nails drummer Chris Vrenna's second solo disc holds up as a distinct audio experience. American McGee's Alice is the latest PC game from Electronic Arts (the makers of the controversial first person murder spree called Doom) which takes Lewis Carol's young heroine into a new kind of digital rabbit hole described as "Wonderland gone to Hell." Vrenna's music creates appropriately creepy moods to go with developments in the story narration, borrowing from the history of scary music from screechy Hitchcock-style strings to the animated menace of The Resident's Freakshow.
