Never Too Loud for Danko Jones Toronto rock trio make a big noise in Europe By Kerry Doole

It seems unfair that Toronto hard rockers Danko Jones remain confined to playing clubs in their home country while being firm favourites at huge rock festivals across the Atlantic. Still, nothing wrong with being bigger in Stockholm than Sudbury, is there? Fittingly, when we interviewed singer/guitarist mainman Danko recently, he was about to head back to Europe to do press in advance of the release of their new album, the appropriately entitled Never Too Loud.
Their fourth full-length album, it is arguably the best yet of a career now spanning 12 years. Jones and bandmates bassist John Calabrese and drummer Dan Cornelius are too busy to spend much time reflecting on their past, but Jones tells us, “We feel proud of the band because we’ve done all these things without compromise.”
“We’ve managed to turn it into our full-time job for the last seven years. That is a success in itself, regardless of how many albums we’ve sold. To be honest I prefer it this way, rather than having two years of incredible success than nothing. I’d rather take the long slow road that leads to something very solid and lasting. I’m a lifer at this point.
Whether I was in a band or not I’d be buying records and be around music in some fanatical kind of way.”
Danko Jones is indeed a music fan, not just a musician. He currently writes columns about his passion in three European magazines, while his long-running radio show, The Magical World of Rock, is syndicated to stations in Sweden, Norway, Germany and Canada. His ongoing passion for rock is also reflected in his group’s intense work ethic and their ‘take no prisoners’ approach to always delivering a high-energy, high-decibel live show. “You’re only as good as your last show.” the charismatic frontman declares. “There is that constant need to impress every single time we go out there. I believe we’re yet to play our best show.”
His band now has some killer new tunes to incorporate into their live set. To record Never Too Loud, they set up shop in L.A. with noted American producer Nick Raskulinecz, (Rush, Foo Fighters, Coheed & Cambria, Stone Sour). He works out of Studio 606, established by Dave Grohl in 2005, and he quickly built a rapport with Danko Jones.
