Birthday Party for Republic of Italy Consulate celebrates 61st anniversary of institutional referendum Originally Published: 2007-06-10
“I’m very happy about this party, about the large and undivided participation of the Italian community. This is an important celebration of our national holiday, but at the same time an event that links Italy and the Italian communities abroad.”
An increasingly robust thread binds Italy with Canada. This friendship, which Consul General Emanuele Punzo underscored, is strengthened by the spirit of those who don’t forget their origins, despite the great distance.
The party was held on Friday, June 1, at the Italian consulate. It’s an appointment of unity and love for one’s native land that years have not diminished. The community of Italians living in Toronto hasn’t forgotten its roots. This moment of reflection and memories dates back to June 2, 1946, the birth day of the new Italy.
“Luckily, it’s not raining; our wishes were fulfilled,” smiled Consul Veronica Ferrucci. “This is an important occasion for celebrating with friends, colleagues of other countries, and our community, and to think more of Italy. I hope that things will continue to improve for our country, to bring about a future that realizes the full potential of Italy and all the richness we have.”
At ease in his role as the host of the party, taking place in the large garden of the Italian consulate on Beverley Street, Punzo presented Mario Sergio with the title of Cavaliere Ufficiale (“Knight Officer”) of the Republic of Italy and welcomed the participants, which included Italian MP Roberto Menia, police officers such as OPP Chief Julian Fantino, the Toronto chapter of the Carabinieri Association led by President Tonino Giallonardo, the Alpini, the Bersaglieri, entrepreneurs and media.
Former Federal Minister of Immigration Judy Sgro was also in attendance. “I’ve been attending this beautiful party for the past eight years. It is always an important opportunity for us and for the community to come together and recognize our roots. I love the Italian community. I’m honoured of belonging to it. I wish Italy greater success on the political and economic fronts. Canada has very good trade relations with Italy, and I hope they will continue to grow.”
