The Papal Boys, as they have come to be known, are already excited. Some 500 people, including students, teachers, principals, and parents officially kicked off World Youth Day 2002 last week. The location of the gathering was St. Augustine Catholic High School, at 2188 Rodick Road in Unionville. "An intense morning, event-rich and joyful," declared Les Miller, Religious Education Consultant of York Catholic District School Board. He added, "Two-thirds were youngsters from elementary to high schools, who intently followed the documentary about the World Youth Day that took place last year in Rome, and requested further information about the upcoming event which is slated to take place in Toronto from July 23 to 28. These youngsters showed enthusiasm and happiness."
Great attention was also displayed during the speeches of Bishop Anthony Meagher, chair of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops World Youth Day Committee, of Father Tom Rosica, national director of the WYD Committee, and of Neil McCarthy, director of communications of Share Life. "All of the youngsters, coming from numerous Catholic schools of the board, followed with great attention their speeches, and at the end asked how they can contribute, and what they can do to make the world youth day a memorable event," added Les Miller.
At the end of the two-hour meeting, the youngsters decided to take on the responsibility of participating in some way in the preparation of the upcoming event, which will bring to Toronto more than 500,000 youth from all around the world, in addition to Pope John Paul II. "They guaranteed that they will form their own committees within their schools, and that they will promote various activities, from advertising the various events linked to the WYD to editing a newsletter and so on. Today's meeting was the success we hoped for, so the foundations for receiving the Pope and the Catholic youth from all around the world were laid," guaranteed Les Miller.
