Children, youth, adults and seniors will all take part in this year's Walk to Cure Cancer, organized by Vaughan in Motion. Whole families are ready to put their sneakers on in support of this event, a fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society. "The date is set for Sunday, April 30, at the Vaughan Mills mall," said Peter Badali, chairman of the event. "We foresee 1,000 participants, who will walk five kilometres inside the huge mall."
It will be a pleasant walk, including stops and relaxation, not just physical exertion. "We invite anyone wishing to spend a pleasant morning," continued Badali. "Inside Vaughan Mills, like last year, there will be performing artists who will entertain the participants and make the event memorable."
Having fun while raising funds for the Canadian Cancer Society is a winning combination. "Statistics paint a clear picture, and urge us all to support research in looking for a cure," added Badali. "One in four Canadians dies of cancer, and about 40 percent of Canadians get some form of cancer in their lifetime."
Future does not look good either, continued Badali. "By 2013, scientists foresee an increase of all kinds of cancer, with up to 70 percent of people affected. Soon, cancer will be the top cause of death in Canada."
Efforts must be tireless until the "disease of the century" will be defeated. "After the Walk to Cure Cancer, Vaughan in Motion will organize a dinner dance on May 26 at the Terrace Banquet Hall. During the event, various awards will be presented to sponsors, volunteers who helped raise funds and people who beat their disease," anticipated Badali. "There will be an exquisite dinner and entertainment with The Fab Four."
Vaughan in Motion has been organizing many events like these ever since, in 1998, it began with its first 5-km Family Walk, sending its volunteers to primary and high schools in Maple, raising awareness about the need to raise funds for the Canadian Cancer Society. "With time, many more volunteers came, proud of our close relation with the Canadian Cancer Society. To date, we've raised $250,000," added Peter Badali. "Just last year's walk and dinner raised $40,000. We are glad of being able to assist the Canadian Cancer Society fund research, information campaigns and programmes in favour of cancer patients."
