Following the success of their iPod, Apple Computer Inc. is hoping to reach similar levels of popularity with their new video iPod. The new iPod will be capable of playing everything from television shows to music videos.
The new 30-gigabyte version will sell for $299 US and a 60-gigabyte version will cost $399. A 30-GB model can hold about 7,500 songs, 25,000 photos or 75 hours of video. The downloaded video can be viewed on a computer or on the iPod's 2.5-inch colour monitor.
Apple also announced a partnership with the American Broadcasting Corporation making popular TV shows, such as Desperate Housewives and Lost, available the day after they've aired on television for $1.99 US.
The new video iPod, available in black or white, will be able to play video and podcasts. Apple said the 30-GB model will have up to 14 hours of battery life while the 60-GB model's battery will last up to 20 hours. Both versions will include a clock, a calendar, a stopwatch and a screen lock.
Just like the music iPods did for the record industry, Apple hopes to achieve similar success with Hollywood - easing piracy fears and transforming business models to include convenient, legal distribution of digital content over the Internet at reasonable prices for consumers.

Tracking traffic congestion with cellphones

Officials at the Missouri Department of Transportation are close to finalizing a deal that would see the tracking of thousands of cellphones to monitor traffic problems using the movement of the phone.
The system works as you drive and begin to slow down, when your cellphone, which needs to be turned on, senses the problem and alerts transportation officials. A congestion alert is then issued, automatically updating electronic road signs and websites, and dispatching text messages to mobile phones and car dashboards.
The Canadian-based company Delcan Corp., which runs a similar project in Baltimore, Maryland, will run the project. After the contract is finalized in a few weeks, a cellphone monitoring system will be tested and implemented within six months.
