All over Canada, the weekend of September 23 and 24 will be devoted to raising funds and awareness for the battle against HIV.
For Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon this will be the 11th such walk. "Hundreds of people - we foresee about 250 - will meet at Mississauga Valley Park at 3:30 pm and walk 6 kms together," says Daven Seebarran, fund development coordinator for the AIDS Walk Peel. "At the end of the day there will be a reading of poetry, a musical show, and a lighting of candles in remembrance of those who've died of AIDS."
This is also a way to show support for those who live every day with this illness, watching their bodies lose strength, and clashing with people's prejudice.
"Peel HIV/AIDS Network is committed to offer support programs to those who have contracted HIV and their families, and to contain the spread of the virus thorugh information campaigns and encounters in schools," explains Seebarran. "We supply practical and psychological support to those who come to us looking for help."
The proceeds of the September 24 walk will go to the many support programs of the Peel HIV/AIDS Network. "There's a lot of work," he says, "but we continue to work to make a difference, to insist with prevention, which is of paramount importance while waiting for the discovery of a drug that could beat this deadly virus. We invite anyone wishing to participate to join us."
AIDS Walk for Life Peel will be held on Saturday, September 24, from 3:30pm, at Mississauga Valley Park, 1275 Mississauga Valley Blvd. (Mississauga Valley Blvd. & Central Parkway).
