Mac versus PC: the war goes on and on Two decades after they were introduced, there are still reasons to go for both By Paul Hutchings

Apple tends to take a back seat to PCs, and given how nice their products can be to use, that isn't always very fair. Especially given the advantages Apple products can have over their competitor's counterparts.
This column was written on a Macintosh, or Mac, built by Apple. This publication was designed on a Mac, and chances are any newspaper or magazine you've ever picked up in the last 15 years or so was designed on a Mac. Macs have cornered the market on graphic design, having become industry standard since introduced by Apple in 1984.
Unfortunately this is the only area they've managed to corner. The PC, or Personal Computer, is still the standard, leaving Mac users as the rebels of the personal computing world.
But those rebels could be on to something. The Mac has some definite advantages. For one, they're far more user friendly than PCs ever were. For example, you generally don't have to install drivers for any electronic devices you may buy, such as MP3 players or digital cameras.
When you plug a device into a Mac, a window pops up on the screen, and you just work with it - no fuss, no muss. Although Windows XP has made PCs a little more user friendly, not everyone has it, can afford it or can give up the seven-plus gigabytes of hard drive space it takes to run it. Also, when you want to delete programs from a PC, you have to delete from several sources. On a Mac, you drag the program's icon into the trash can, empty the trash, and that's it - program gone.
Esthetically Macs are more pleasing to the eye, in fact some people actually choose them because they may go with a certain décor at home. They are manufactured in bright colours, such as blue, red and green - or a brilliant white as in the recent eMacs - and although this may be a reason for not taking them seriously, people love having a computer that looks distinctive.
People are choosing Mac laptops, not just because of ease of use, but because of size as well. Mac has a model that is a foot long, which is perfect for the traveller with not much space to spare.
