Bottega Veneta debuts on the runway while Armani pays tribute to Hollywood

Bottega Veneta kicked off the Milan fashion week of preview womenswear showings for next winter with its first-ever runway show recently, and the collection by creative director Tomas Maier was an ode to romanticism and craftsmanship.
Models in flared princess coats, high-heeled pumps and artisan bags walked out from behind a backdrop printed with the words, "When your own initials are enough," the slogan of the upscale leather goods manufacturer that was founded in 1996 and is now part of the Gucci Group.
The show was all about top-drawer dressing by a woman intent on being one of a kind. But most of all, the slender winter silhouette helped define the accessories, which are the trademark of the company.
This season the bag is smaller and held closer to the body to match the narrow silhouette of small shoulders and an elongated hemline. Heels are extra tall, whether thick and sporty for daytime or narrow and demure by night. The rich fall colours of the leather combined with the intense orange, green and grey of the shimmery silk-velvet jersey used for many of the outfits create a warm winter feel.
The detail of the handbags represents the best in Bottega Veneta craftsmanship. Along with the trademark braided leather, the new collection offers pieces of onyx sewn into the weave and handles worked like jewelry to create a winding vine effect.
Since Maier joined in 2001, Bottega Veneta had been doing presentations of its collections in the company's Milan showroom.
"The runway represents the need for the company to evolve, to offer the whole look," Maier said after the much applauded show.
Later that day, "moda Milanese" icon Giorgio Armani presented his second-line Emporio collection aimed at the younger set.
The extravagant show paid tribute to the Hollywood of yesteryear with a series of what the designer calls "fabulous moments."
At times, for the Armani client these moments might better be defined as "surprising." A pantsuit in red and white checks, and exotic patterns for a silk miniskirt with matching stockings, leopard printed coats and pinstriped shorts are not the usual staid Armani fare.
