Toronto's own Keanu Reeves is certainly one of Hollywood's most puzzling cats. Although there's little question he's a cutie, most people tend to forget that he's also a good actor. Forget Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure -funny material is not always easy to act out, mind you - Reeves has acted in some terrific and difficult films, including Tim Hunter's River's Edge, Gus Van Sant's My Own Private Idaho and The Matrix trilogies.
Born in Beirut by showgirl mom, Patricia, Reeves didn't have much of a relationship with his dad (Samuel Reeves is currently serving a jail sentence for cocaine possession). After his little sister, Kim who is now battling leukemia, was born, Reeves moved with his mom to New York City where Patricia met and married director Paul Aaron. Eventually the entire family would move to Toronto where Keanu would attend (but not complete) Jarvis Collegiate high school. (Patricia has since divorced and married at least twice.)
Unable to get a job with the Second City Touring Company, Reeves turned his attention to Toronto's independent stage landing his first role in Theatre Passe Muraille's production of Wolfboy. The incentive to move to Los Angeles came after Reeves got a small part in the hockey feature Youngblood, starring Rob Lowe. Keanu quickly landed lead roles in indie films such as Permanent Record and The Prince of Pennsylvania, soon rising to more prominent features such as Dangerous Liaisons, Parenthood and I Love You To Death. The rest (Point Break, Speed, The Matrix, etc.) is pure box-office success.
His latest film, Constantine, features the 40-year-old actor as comic book hero John Constantine, who battles demons in order not to be drawn into hell for eternity. Constantine, told he is dying of lung cancer, is approached by desperate but skeptical police detective Angela Dodson (Rachel Weisz) who enlists his help in solving the mysterious death of her beloved twin sister. Their investigation takes them through the world of demons and angels that exists just beneath the landscape of contemporary L.A.
