The Divine Miss Emm Gryner

It remains a major mystery why this Canadian songstress hasn't become an international star. She has a pure and strong voice, writes melodic pop songs, is a charming performer and is drop-dead gorgeous. DAVID BOWIE is a big fan (he hired Emm as a member of his touring band), but rather than chasing stardom, Gryner prefers to work independently. This enables her to record prolifically, and she recently launched another new album, Songs Of Love And Death, with a showcase at Top O' The Senator. Interesting concept here, as it features Emm covering songs by Irish artists (she's one-quarter Irish). Fortunately, no U2 songs on it, but artists covered include THIN LIZZY, HORSLIPS, THE CORRS, ASH and the fabulous UNDERTONES. Highlights of the set from Gryner and her fine, three-piece band included Horslip's dramatic "Dearg Doom" and GILBERT O'SULLIVAN's "Nothing Rhymed." The CD is now out on Dead Daisy/Outside.
NATASHA ALEXANDER: This local singer/songwriter has been eliciting serious industry interest in New York City, and a recent short (four songs) set at Top O' The Senator showed why. Natasha opened up for EMM GRYNER, demonstrating fluent piano playing and singing her introspective material in a clear and strong voice. A warm stage presence is another asset. Alexander told On The Beat that she's currently recording an album with BYRON WONG (MY BRILLIANT BEAST), and the results of that collaboration are eagerly awaited.
KUUMBA: For the 10th year, Harbourfront Centre will be celebrating AFRICAN HERITAGE MONTH by presenting the Kuumba Festival. This features music, dance, spoken word and film. A ticketed event on February 5th at The Brigantine Room features reggae luminary JUNIOR KELLY, who performs and discusses the state of the genre. Opening acts include DJs and a roots reggae band. At the same venue on Feb. 12th is award-winning Somali musician K'NAAN in his first local concert. He's joined by the LOVE MOVEMENT and DJ NANA. Free events include djembe drum master AMINA ALFRED (Feb. 6th at 4 p.m.) and multi-instrumentalist KOBENA ACQUAA-HARRISON (Feb. 12-13). On the film side, there's a video biography of BOB MARLEY, Rebel Music, that merits a look.
