Woodbine is the most famous name in Canadian racecourse history and is home to various international and multi-million dollar races.
The original Woodbine opened in 1874 on the then-far eastern outskirts of downtown Toronto. Since the early days, the track has changed its name more than twice. The present Woodbine, which has undergone several multi-million dollar expansions and upgrades, was opened on June 12, 1956. It is located on 640 acres on the northwestern outskirts of Toronto and is the only racetrack in North America capable of conducting Standardbred and Thoroughbred racing on the same day. Another special feature includes a state of the art teletheatre erected in the early 90s. It is also a location where many prominent events are held throughout the year.
This year on July 11, the Woodbine Racetrack and Casino will be transformed into all things Italian to celebrate the traditions, culture and the most important aspect of all, the sumptuous delicacies that Italians are famous for. On this special occasion, Italian day at the racetrack is co-organized by Corriere Canadese, The Canadian Italian Daily News, who will be celebrating their 50th anniversary of success in the media business. As part of the day's events, Corriere Canadese will be sponsoring one of the races and will present a special award to the winner.
Marking the second year of this notable event, there will be a wide variety of things to do for the entire family. A live band with a singer and dancers will be part of the live entertainment provided for the celebration. As part of the activities, for the first time, Woodbine will introduce a human Gettone game that closely resembles the popular game foosball. Prizes will include authentic jerseys and guests will also get a chance to win an all-inclusive trip for two to Italy from the betting coupons purchased for "Italian Day".
Due to the excitement of last year's pasta presentation, the winning horse of the Italian Stakes Race will receive a plate of pasta again this year. Spectators will also be given a chance to cheer their region of Italy in the stakes race, including Trentino, Friuli, Veneto, Umbria, Abruzzo, Molise, Basilcata, Calabria, Sicilia, Lazio and Toscana. In addition, for those daring individuals there will be a pasta eating contest and first prize will be a $100 betting voucher and consolation prizes for those that come in second and third.
