The ballots for the community consultation on the renewal of the Comites, which in Canada saw the competition between Progetto Italia-Canada (centre-left) and Viva l'Italia (centre-right), are being counted. Final results are already available for the Edmonton and Vancouver consular areas, in Montreal the deadline has been extended by one week, while in Toronto partial results gave Progetto Italia-Canada the lead.
Final data first. In the Edmonton area, out of 4,398 ballots mailed to voters, 1,511 were mailed back (34.35 percent), including 244 void. Progetto Italia-Canada got 933 votes (73.6 percent), while 322 (25.41 percent) went to Viva l'Italia.
A peculiar situation happened in Vancouver, where the forces of both coalitions presented a unified list, under the name used in the rest of Canada by centre-left forces. In the Pacific riding, 11,218 ballots were mailed and 5,847 came back (52.12 percent), including 401 void: the unified list obtained 5,076 votes (93.2 percent) while the local Rinnovamento Italia got 362 (6.4 percent).
The Ottawa Comites, formed less than two years ago, saw the confirmation of 8 incumbents (out of 12 members) during a public meeting.
Toronto sent over 70,000 ballots, and 28,206 were sent back. At the moment of closing the paper, 27,006 of these had been counted. Currently, 4,279 ballots were void; UCIM got 1,640 votes (7.2 percent) and one seat with a rest of 0.29; Progetto Italia-Canada received 10,958 votes (48.2 percent) and eight seats plus one for the rest of 0.7; Viva l'Italia obtained 10,129 votes (44.6 percent) and eight seats with a rest of 0.02. The centre-left list edged forward.
In the rest of the world, the turnout of Italians went up, going from the 20.5 percent of 1997 to over 34 percent, according to projections released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In the countries where true elections were allowed, the votes were cast by mail, and the deadline expired last Friday at midnight. Vote counting began on Sunday and are still underway.
