Culture and traditions are very strong within the Italian-Canadian community. It is furthermore solidified when events such as Viva Italia, with the help of a visionary like Nadia Pazzano are created and prove successful.
Nadia Pazzano, an Italian-Canadian second year law student at Queen's University is playing a strong role in creating awareness in the community. A Canadian-Italian Business Professional Association (CIBPA) bursary recipient, she has recently become president of the Queen's Law Italian Cultural Association (QLICA), an organization that allows Italian-Canadian students to celebrate their culture. Nadia explains, "I wanted to become involved in a cause that I felt passionate about. Not only does QLICA develop new and interesting activities that enhance student life, that club also fosters pride in the fact that heritage and traditions are essential to the identity of Italian-Canadians."
Pazzano took the initiative to propose the Viva Italia! project for CIBPA sponsorship. "CIBPA is a great role model. Their commitment to students and community life is apparent in everything they do and we knew their vision reflected what we wanted to accomplish. After a lengthy discussion about possible sponsors we knew CIBPA would be the best partner." CIBPA grants bursaries to particularly deserving students of Italian origin, to enable them to pursue their undergraduate or post-graduate studies.
This is one of many initiatives that the law student has in mind. Pazzano also plans a dinner-dance and an event called Festa del Calcio, an authentic Italian picnic featuring the game Italians are best known for - soccer.
Tandem spoke to Pazzano about her current pursuits.
How did you become involved with QLICA?
"I attended a QLICA dinner last year and enjoyed it so much that I wanted to play a bigger role in the association. This year the position of president became open and I gladly volunteered to fill it. As the new president my focus is on acquiring new sponsors and making links with other Italian associations in the community."
