Farewell to Arms Italy salutes 19 soldiers killed in Nassiriya Originally Published: 2003-11-23
Over 500,000 people paid tribute to the 19 Carabinieri killed in the terrorist attack last week in Nassiriya. The coffins, draped in the Italian flag, were displayed in Rome's Vittoriano and the funeral mass took place at the Basilica of San Paolo. The ceremony was conducted by Cardinal Camillo Ruini, bishop of Rome, who urged the mourners to fight "our enemies but not to hate them." Tributes to the slain soldiers came from around the world including Pope John Paul II, U.S. President George W. Bush, British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Russian president Vladimir Putin.
