As the electoral competition recedes, parties go back to their work, re-organizing for next November's re-opening of the Parliament. The attention is focused on the Liberal Party of Ontario, for the ritual lottery of ministerial posts.
The next Grit government, which will be sworn in in a week's time, is raising a lot of interest within the Italian-Canadian community, a noticeable contributor to McGuinty's victory.
The names of seven MPPs of Italian origin are being circulated, and four of them are almost certain of a seat at the table of the Government at Queen's Park.
Several articles have already been written about the composition of the next Liberal government: these are all suppositions, given the fact that the Premier-elect has not yet compiled a specific list, but the picture is getting clearer.
What we report in the following paragraphs are only rumours collected in circles very close to the top of the Liberal Party. The sources are authoritative, but these remain rumours nonetheless.
"Before naming names," told us a person very close to the new Premier, "you have to understand him. Dalton has two main characteristics: he's loyal, and he's prudent." Of course, loyalty and prudence will guide the new Premier in choosing his first cabinet.
Loyalty will therefore privilege those who supported him from the start; prudence will help those with experience and Queen's Park seniority.
Considering these characteristics, here are the rumours going around in top Liberal circles about Italian-Canadian MPPs.
McGuinty's closest and most influential collaborator will obviously be party chairman Greg Sorbara. Sorbara and Sandra Pupatello will most definitely be included.
Sorbara would be interested in the post of Finance minister, and very likely he'll get it; Pupatello, currently Deputy Leader of the party, will also get a very important position; some people mentioned the Ministry for Economic Development.
Another expert Italian-Canadian very close to McGuinty is Rick Bartolucci. The Sudbury representative was always interested in security issues, but he could get instead a post dealing more with Northern Ontario.
