TASTE OF LITTLE ITALY: One of the city's most popular free summer festivals returns for its fifth year, June 13 and 14. It celebrates the rich culture and lively ambience of the thriving College Street strip by presenting some top local musicians as well as other entertaining activities for the whole family. The music takes place between 7 and 11:00 p.m. on both evenings, all on College between Euclid and Shaw. The artists selected offer Latin, jazz, salsa, Brazilian, blues and pop stylings. The programmers could be criticized for generally sticking to groups that have played the festival previously, but when they are of such high quality, it is hard to quibble at that. Especially recommended are jazz/blues diva LAURA HUBERT, award-winning bluesman MICHAEL PICKETT, the explosive percussion ensemble SAMBA SQUAD, nuevo flamenco duo BORG & VELLA, and the SCHOLA CANTORUM CHILDREN'S CHOIR.
REGINA CARTER: This American jazz violin virtuoso was recently given a huge honour. She was given permission to use the most famous violin in classical music, PAGANINI's Guarneri, for a recording, and the superb results can now be heard on her new CD, Paganini: After A Dream (on Verve/Universal). Carter is the first non-classical player to play the legendary violin, and she puts it to use on material that bridges the jazz and classical worlds. She and her group cover pieces by RAVEL, FAURE ("Pavane"), ASTOR PIAZZOLA, and ENNIO MORRICONE (the theme from Cinema Paradiso). Most of this warmly recommended album was recorded in Genoa.
GOLDFISH: To celebrate their first anniversary, this production house threw a lavish (seafood from Rodney's) and entertaining party in their Sumach Street offices/studios. The company is headed by composers/musicians/producers DANIEL LEBLANC, MARK HUKEZALIE and CREIGHTON DOANE, and includes industry veteran GRAHAM STAIRS. They operate in a variety of fields, from composing and recording jingles and film and TV scores to work with up and coming artists in a number of genres. Doane gave yours truly a guided tour of the impressive space, and bubbled with enthusiasm as he discussed his current batch of musical projects (including his own sophomore solo album). Amongst those partying were top local singers EMILIE-CLAIRE BARLOW and KATHRYN ROSE, a couple of HEADSTONES, actor/playwright TED DYKSTRA (married to Doane's sister, MELANIE), singer/songwriters DAN BRYK and CHRIS WARREN and legendary rocker/DJ BOB SEGARINI, who is now back on the air on Q107.
