More consciously bloated and decidedly more conventional than its predecessor, The Matrix Reloaded is still chock-full of exceptional action scenes and astounding special effects.
Neo (Keanu Reeves) has left the mind-control of the Matrix, into which the rest of the unconscious human race is plugged, to pursue "truth and choice" alongside the woman he loves, Trinity (Carrie-Ann Moss). While the couple, and their captain Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne), still believe in the Oracle's predictions, the rest of the "free" humans are more skeptical as they prepare to defend their city, Zion, from the inevitable onslaught of the machines.
The biggest letdown in The Matrix Reloaded is the script where the dialogue contains too many platitudes that ultimately bog down the pacing. But what saves the picture is the action, which is wonderful. There is no doubt that all the actors and effects wizards have excelled themselves with sequences that are literally breathtaking.
Despite the lapses in the script, The Matrix Reloaded is the film to see this summer. And hang around after the credits for the exclusive preview of the final chapter in the trilogy, The Matrix Revolutions, which is released later this year.
