Yuk Yuk's, a popular comedy club in Toronto, was the first to host a unique show entitled Night of 1000 Pasesanos. True to their word, opening night on Sunday April 6 was a celebration of Italian stand-up comedians. It brought such a positive response that Yuk Yuk's plans to run this special show the first Sunday of every month.
Italians have been known to "kid around". To outsiders they might appear goofy with their traditional ways and foreign accents, and let us not forget their own version of the English language, the ever-popular Italiese. "Si trova nella back-yarda". Comedians have come a long way in being respected entertainers. They do much more than make people laugh. They inspire, provoke and entertain. A comedian's job is still to make people chuckle, however, throughout the years the job has evolved. It now includes making audiences of various ages understand some tough material.
Current events in Canada and around the world can be almost always the source of ridicule. Political issues lead and are at the forefront of the list. Many times a comedian may choose to incorporate these themes into their routine. United with tales of Italian immigration, cultural habits and way of life, these Italian comedians were successful in creating the perfect balance.
To make audiences laugh, there is one catch, the audience members must understand or have some notion of current events or the Italian language. By doing so, the comedian serves a dual action, they educate audiences in both language and issues, poking fun by introducing opposing viewpoints, imitating or mimicking both political leaders as well as Italians.
Comedians like Tony Venditti, Frank Spadone and Chris Nannarone graced the stage with their sketch comedies hoping to be the next Jim Carrey, Mike Bullard or Rick Morains - all comedians who launched their career at Yuk Yuk's and are now a big success. Whether just starting out or already established, comedy remains an art form. Now more than ever, its goal is to make audiences forget their worries and troubles even for an hour, and to make them laugh out loud and shed a tear or two out of sheer enjoyment.
