Calla Televise - Arrco/Ryko/Outside Music By Chris Twomey

This Texan trio has been getting good reviews for their sensitive guitar music, winning prestigious opening slots before Nick Cave and Sigur Ros. Like the lauded Icelandic group, Calla play a slow, delicate rock that can build towards peaks of shoe-gazing intensity. On their third CD (after releases from the Belgian label Sub Rosa and ex-Swan Michael Gira's Young God imprint) they continue to develop a sound keying on a deep bottom end and sophisticated atmospherics from feedback textures (like the late 80s band AR Kane). Over this Aurelio Valle's soft voice intones dreamy lyrics that hold a potential for darkness as much as the music does. If you are intrigued by the soft-is-the-new-loud rock of bands in the wake of My Bloody Valentine check out the latest from Calla. They are currently touring with Luna, heading towards an appearance at SXSW in March.
