Peter Murphy Dust - Metropolis/Outside Music By Chris Twomey

On his latest studio album Peter Murphy has achieved his most accomplished solo work to date, combining the east and west influences in his life during recordings sessions in Montreal and Istanbul (where he lives with his Turkish wife and their children). With the input of Turkish musicians, Indian percussionist Shankar (who's been featured on recordings by Peter Gabriel) and Real World producer/guitarist Michael Brook, Dust has the moody atmosphere of predawn in the "mysterious" Orient. Surprisingly it is Canadian violinist Hugh Marsh (who's played for Bruce Cockburn and k.d. Lang) who provides the Indian-sounding violin that snakes around Murphy's sensual vocal lines and mournful lamentations. Lyrically it is Murphy's strongest work also, as he dives deep into the shadows and light of his life, writing profoundly on spiritual matters, and the power of poetic images to defy logic in the striking opener "Things To Remember." Murphy and his new band of Canadian musicians will be playing Toronto on Monday, May 6th, at the Phoenix.
