Ten years later and 9/11 still remains a delicate subject for many. The attacks on the World Trade Center changed the entire world in several ways. So what happens when an author takes the events of that tragic day to tell a story about love and finding happiness? You have An Affinity for Shadows, written by California author, Liz R. Newman. The novel is about an ambitious, award-winning journalist, Kate Theodore who rushes to the scene of 9/11 to capture the perfect story and pressures her cameraman into accompanying her. Sadly, he dies at the scene of a heart attack and she feels responsible for his death. Her guilt leads to her quest to rediscover herself. Her changing relationship with her best friend Tabitha also puts a toll on her outlook on life. It is during this search for meaning that she meets a handsome Italian stranger, Sal Olivieri. Kate soon becomes captivated by his charms and realizes he is much more than she ever dreamed he would be. She reunites with him again during her trip to Italy where she resides for two weeks at a Roman villa.
“Decadent, sensual, humorous, and full of twists, turns, and surprises” is how the author describes the novel. And readers can expect just that. A compelling read, the novel is more than just your typical romance. Readers will easily identify with the characters and be instantly immersed in the plot. The novel also doesn’t shy away from details. Painting a clear picture for readers, one can’t help but feel they are part of the plot rather than simply reading a book. Liz Newman’s descriptions of the picturesque Italian countryside, was inspired by her trip to Italy. “When I visited Italy, especially Rome, it made an impression upon me so great I cannot wait to return. There is something about the city of Rome that is so amazingly sensual in its experience. The sights of the Colosseum, so grand in its bearing and yet so decrepit at the same time, the sound of mopeds speeding by, the smells of garlic, wine, prosciutto and basil, and the splendid art that to me are perhaps the most beautiful and insightful artistic accomplishments in history, are all so dazzling and a testimony to the many facets of human existence,” says Newman.
