As one of Canada's most awarded and respected documentarians, filmmaker John Paskievich has brought his unique viewpoint about displacement into his many works. As a tribute to this Canadian talent, Cinematheque Ontario is presenting Journey Between Two Worlds: The Films of John Paskievich, from April 5 to April 14.
One of Paskievich's most personal films is My Mother's Village (Apr. 5), where the director travels back to the Ukraine he escaped from as a child to meet with family members.
Ted Baryluk's Grocery (Apr. 6), a short about an immigrant grocery store owner on the verge of retirement, will be screened alongside Sedna: The Making of a Myth, based on an ancient Inuit legend.
Paskievich travels to the remote town of Svinia in eastern Slovakia to document the story of the Roma (gypsies) in Gypsies of Svinia (Apr. 7); and goes to Czechoslovakia to make If Only I Were an Indian, about a group of Czech "Indians" who emulate the ways of the Canadian Cree.
On April 10 there's a triple bill featuring The Price of Daily Bread, about a Manitoba family forced to sell their farm; The Old Believers, about the Russian orthodox living in Alberta; and The Actor, about Indian photographer Ken D'Cruz.
All screenings take place at AGO's Jackman Hall, 317 Dundas St. W. For more details call 416-968-FILM.

Although he's given up his homeland for Hollywood, Canadians still love funnyman Jim Carrey. The Toronto native was named Canada's favourite comic in a poll commissioned by the Comedy Network. Results from the Ipsos-Reid survey, which ranks the country's greatest comedians, showed that 12 percent of Canadians favoured Carrey as their favourite comic. Runners up included fellow Canadians John Candy in third place, Martin Short in sixth and Mike Myers in eighth. TV shows also ranked high, with the cast of Royal Canadian Air Farce was fourth, Kids in the Hall fifth and SCTV's cast was ninth. Other results of the polls found that Canadians think our country is funnier than any other and that "Canadian humour is more sophisticated than American humor" (sic). Over two-thirds of those responding (67 percent), also found that men are funnier than women. Carrey's credits include The Majestic, Me, Myself & Irene, The Truman Show, The Mask and the Ace Ventura films.
