USB flash drives are among the coolest technological innovations of the day. The size of a key, the drive is simple to activate but especially able to store megabytes a go-go. In the beginning there was the floppy, easy to use and convenient for moving files among computers. The advent of e-mail reduced if not almost cancelled the use. It's easier and less cumbersome to send an attachment than to find one of the innumerable diskettes dispersed in every corner of the office. However, the removable storage is in some cases still the preferred solution. Floppies, anyway, belong to the past, replaced by Zip, Jazz, Superdisk and, dulcis in fundo, USB flash drives.
The ThumbDrive SMART, produced by Trek, is an example of these cool gadgets. Barely over an inch in width, the USB drive is a perfect driverless device that works as soon as it comes out of its box.
Available in different configurations, 16/32/64/128 MB ($39/69/99/149 US), the ThumbDrive works perfectly both on PCs (Win98 and up) and Macs (OS 8.6 and up), thus becoming an easy and effective bridge between your workstations. Its reduced size make it handy, and fit for any situation. Read/write speed is more than acceptable, especially when compared to other models or to floppy performance.
Activating is a breeze: just uncap it and plug it in a USB port, and its use is no different from a normal floppy.
The only drawback is having to search for the USB port, as most of them are located in the back of the PC. The situation improves with Apple material, as one can use the USB port vista located on the keyboard, which makes everything easier.
For those who are afraid of erasing their ThumbDrive by mistake, the device offers the possibility to lock the information via a switch in the back.
So, no cable, no power, no drivers needed, just space to store your information, real data on the go. Our judgement in this case can only be a big thumbs up.
