Belkin FireWire 6-Port Hub
By Alessandro Cancian
Perhaps a hub is just a hub, but there is a difference between any old hub and a Belkin hub. To find out, all one has to do is try out the 6-port FireWire product recently released by the American company.
This elegant product deserves the highest marks for its design. The Belkin hub is ideal for anyone who requires several FireWire ports to connect to their computer many existing devices, such as scanners, digital camcorders, printers and more. FireWire is a high-speed connectivity standard, ideal for transferring digital videos from a camcorder. It has become well known thanks to the increased demand for video editing.
Simple and thoughtfully conceived, the hub occupies very little space on your desktop and may be positioned either vertically or horizontally to suit your individual needs.
Equipped with six FireWire ports, five of which are hidden behind an easily removable cover while the sixth is situated frontally, the hub allows connections with a dazzling amount of peripheral devices.
The Belkin hub is perfectly compatible with either a Mac (OS 9 and higher) or PC (Windows 98SE or higher) computer and comes equipped with a power supply, should the peripheral unit require one.
In fact, peripheral devices that do not require a great deal of power are normally powered through the FireWire. Installation onto a brand new G4 required nothing more than a connection between the FireWire cable (provided) and my computer and, after a few seconds, my scanner and digital camcorder were working without the slightest problem.
Available in white or silver, the products sells in Canada for $109, which is a fair price for a good hub... or rather, for a Belkin hub.
