Running in Rome
Canadians raise money for diabetes research in marathonBy Francesca Iacobelli
Any traveller who has set foot in Rome will argue that a week's tour of the Eternal City is in itself a marathon. With so much to see, it's difficult to pace yourself on vacation.
Calabrian-born Pino Correale, a 56-year-old salon owner from Missisauga, is going to Rome for other reasons. He has spent the last eight months training and raising funds for the Canadian Diabetes Association and will embark upon a somewhat brisk tour of Rome: in a marathon.
The 2004 Rome Marathon will take place in March, 2004. By raising $5500 for the cause, participants have almost all of their expenses paid while in Rome - including accommodation, airfare, pre- and post-race meals, free entry into the marathon, and 16 weeks of training.
"The chance to go back to my homeland of Italy while supporting such a great cause was something I can not turn away from," says Correale. "Running through the streets of Rome, seeing the Colosseum in the distance, this is the visualization that gives me the motivation to continue on!"
The 42.2 km race is part of a series of fundraising efforts by the Canadian Diabetes Association to increase awareness of its work, including research, education, service and advocacy. In Toronto alone, there are over 240,000 people affected by diabetes. Correale says that he became involved in the Canadian Diabetes Association because he was impressed with the work that the organization does: "By becoming more educated about diabetes and by rising both awareness and some much needed funding, we can hope that this disease will one day be conquered."
Studies have proven that type 2 diabetes can be delayed or prevented with better living habits, including exercise. Seventy percent of these global trekkers use the Team Diabetes Canada experience to participate in their very first marathon. Besides championing a healthy lifestyle, every Team Diabetes Canada member is challenging himself or herself to accomplish a sometimes daunting goal of finishing, but also to raise funds for a noble cause.
Team Diabetes marathons are held several times during the year in different cities. In August, 2004, the Team will head to Reykjavik, Iceland. Later that year, the Team will run in Dublin and Bermuda.
Recruitment for the Reykjavik Marathon has already begun.
