Beady Belle

Cewbeagappic - Jazzland Rec/Universal

By Chris Twomey

This is the second album from the musical partnership of singer Beate Lech and bassist Marius Reksjo, who are returning to the Canadian festival circuit this summer and are expected in Toronto on Sunday June 29th at a venue to be announced. Their classy jazz-soul comes from the hot Norwegian label Jazzland, who's owner/producer Bugge Wesseltoft won the Norwegian Grammy last year and mixed this new release. The Beady Belle sound is focused on the smooth and dexterous delivery of vocalist Lech, who really deserves some attention when compared to those rudimentary "jazz" singers in the charts these days. Her melodies are clean and sensitive, with enough outside expression to be included in the "nu jazz" scene. This time she also creates some interesting harmony vocals, especially the Bjork style ethereal hook of "Big Balloon" and the backing chorus of vocalese behind the broken groove titled "One And Only."
