A.R.E. Weapons

A.R.E. Weapons - Rough Trade/Sanctuary/EMI Canada

By Chris Twomey

The New York trio in A.R.E. Weapons provide a stark contrast to The Stroke's collegiate nostalgia for New York rock with a darker vision of street life in the city that never sleeps. Behind the mysterious image of Robert Blake from David Lynch's Lost Highway are stories of youth gone wild in gangs, prostitution and the drug subculture. A.R.E. Weapons come from the original "electroclash" scene with a sound marrying punk guitars and the minimal kerb-crawling basslines of 70's synth pioneers Suicide. Over the Suicide-ish sounds of "Fuck You Pay Me" some lyrics from Lou Reed's "Walk On The Wild Side" help illustrate the sordid relationships of this new generation of beautiful losers. More plugged-in than Jon Spencer and more dangerous than Peaches, A.R.E. Weapons' "electro-punk" talks the talk and walks the walk.
