CQ - Motion Picture Soundtrack - Emperor Norton/Outside Music

By Chris Twomey

This soundtrack for the feature film debut by Francis Ford Coppola's son Roman was put together by Beck drummer Brian Reitzell who previously did the faux movie music CD Logan's Sanctuary. This time the cues are for real but Reitzell's nostalgic aesthetic remains the same. The flick is a movie-within-a-movie scenario about a '60's film director in Paris making camp sci-fi like Barbarella. Reitzell's musical selections evoke the era quite well, with choice psychedelic pop/rock tunes from period artistes Jacques Dutronc and Claude Francois, and groovy library music by 60's composers Antonello Paliotti and Paul Piot. The original music by the French group Mellow is also right in tune with the times, merging analogue keyboard and synthesizer sounds with Bacharach-type horns and strings in the style of their famous countrymen Air. CQ's mix of old and vintage-sounding tracks is fresh and fun - not too heavy on the cheese.
