Nothing Down-To-Earth - Law & Auder/Fusion III

By Chris Twomey

Canadian Charles-Emile Beullac is an electronic music producer in Quebec City, who like the Scots in Boards Of Canada, is making timeless music using '70s analogue gear. Working in apparent isolation from the active scenes in Montreal and elsewhere, Beullac has managed to hook up with the Worm Interface label in London for a compilation appearance in 2000 and now this debut full-length release on another British label with a significant catalogue of cutting edge electronica, Law & Auder. Galerie Stratique music has the melancholic feel of contemporary Warp label groups like Autechre and Aphex Twin, plus a unique connection with classic '70s electronic music, especially when painting pictures of natural scenes like his tracks with water themes. "Frozen Lakes" glides like a piano tune by Cluster with arpeggios borrowed from Jean Michel Jarre, while "Bathyscaphe" dives deep with the grace of Kraftwerk. Beullac's wonderful music is available throughout Europe and North American and many who've heard it are wondering why more of a fuss isn't being made about it.
