Kings Landing Historical Settlement

Don't let the name or the homes mislead you. Kings Landing Historical Settlement was created when the Mactaquac Dam was constructed in the late '60's. Historic homes threatened by the rising water were moved to Prince William on the banks of the St. John River just a 20 minute drive west of Fredericton. Then farms, mills, a school, church and factory were added and today you can step back into the 19th century and a time when people and the community worked together to survive. It's an enjoyable day trip and a real learning experience.

More than 100 costumed people bring to life all the chores, the entertainment, and the lifestyle of the original pioneers. The restored houses, each architecturally significant to the area are filled with antiques.

Kings Landing has more than 65,000 artifacts that illustrate life in the Valley from 1790 to 1910. You can dine at The Axe & Plough and enjoy a family-oriented menu or visit The Kings Head Inn with costumed service staff and a menu that reflects the 1855 setting.

One unique program for youngsters is entitled Visiting Cousins. For eight weeks during the school summer break, it offers children an opportunity to experience the lifestyle of a young person in the 1800s. They are dressed in appropriate costume and become a visiting relative to one of the Kings Landing families. During their five-day stay they participate in wool processing, butter making, rug hooking, attend an 1840's school, cook on a wood stove and apprentice with the blacksmith, carpenter, cooper, and farmer. There are no televisions, video games or radios- just 19th century games.

Participation is limited to 160 children aged nine to 14. Tuition is $280 and includes food, lodging, 24-hour supervision, rental of appropriate costumes and other necessary supplies. The kids love it so much, they have now developed another program called The Family Kin for those between 12 and 15 who want to go back and expand on the experience.
